Flora and Fauna of Combat Dome

FAUNA

amoeba.jpg

AMOEBA

Game: First Game
Number Witnessed: unspecified

The only things which appear to survive the meteor apart from our heroes. After a while, they climb out of the sea, and that's about it. One may have been named Bob.

APE-LIKE PRIMATIVE

Game: First Game
Number witnessed: unspecified

Creatures which the Teacher (Lazarus) is trying to coax into evolving into humans (see below) following the destruction of most life by a dirty great space-rock. Capable of building houses and statues, albeit not very good ones.

CAIT SITH’S SPECIES

Game: FFVII Game
Number witnessed: 1

Cait Sith is a small, vaguely anthropomorphic cat with a sense of humour and a reasonable IQ. It has been brought to the attention of the creator of this page that Cait Sith is also apparently a robot, which would mean that it doesn't strictly have a species. The creator in question has decided that he doesn't care.

DOG

250px-Dog_Artwork.jpg

Game: FFVII Game; DD&D
Other Media: FWoaN
Number witnessed: 1 seen, 1 mentioned

A ‘guard hound’ in Midgar is mercilessly poisoned by Loki before he repents. The creature is not discribed, although potions can be distilled from its blood. In the prologue to DD&D, it is noted that the Chairman of the Ankh-Morpork Royal Bank is a dog.

If the picture to the right is anything to go by, the phrase 'Guard Hound' in the FFVII Game is actually something of a misnomer. I don't know what that thing is, but it sure as heck aint a dog…

DONKEY

Game: DD&D
Number witnessed: 1 seen, 1 mentioned

Lu Tze rides a donkey named Bob, and mentions an Omnian saint named Bobby who is also a donkey.

DRAGON

Game: First Game; DD&D; SS&S
Number Witnessed: 1

Springheel's fiery re-entrance to his universe is blamed by locals on dragons or God (see below). There used to be dragons in the Wyrmberg… hence the name. Since the Auditors (see below) started nicking magic, the dragons in question have disappeared.
A dragon actually appears for the first time in SS&S, having hitched a ride on a multidimensional anomoly to get from Pern to Diversity. Dragons of this type are capable of teleportation and telepathy - which unfortunately makes them a prime target for the Damned.

DWARF

Game: DD&D; SS&S
Number witnessed: 13 seen, 2 mentioned

A dwarf is a short, bearded humanoid. Susan Sto Helit is seen talking to one briefly. On Diversity, dwarves are one of the five dominant races, granted the gift of metallurgy and a mild resistance to magic. They are expert miners, due to a magpie-like obsession with gold and other such shininess.

ETERNAL

Game: SS&S
Number Witnessed: Only mentioned

It is noted by the Doctor that whoever blocked off the SS&S universe was more powerful than an Eternal.

EYELESS

Game: SS&S
Number witnessed: Only mentioned

River suspects Xylia of being an Eyeless, temporarily.

FAIRY

Game: SS&S
Number Witnessed: over 9

One of the dominant races of Diversity, gifted with abnormal magical gifts including the abilities to weave elflocks and create tactile illusions. They also have telepathy (of sufficient power to create a hierarchical hivemind) the ability to sense magic, and the ability to sense fluctuations in the fabric of reality, although they do not have taste, proprioception, noiception, or a sense of balance. They also have a vulnerability to cold iron. Subspecies include Fauns (which have goat-like legs and features), Sprites (which are tiny and fly) and Hobgoblins (which are lanky with fur and sharp-teeth).

FISH

Game: SS&S
Number Witnessed: unspecified

Several 'inquisitive' fish are seen underwater by Talhoffer.

GERRYMANDER

Game: SS&S
Number Witnessed: only mentioned

Talhoffer and Pete are mentioned as having accidentally burnt down a gerrymander city. Descriptions are not gone into, but if Wikipedia is anything to go by, they may be long-necked, winged, upright, politically-minded salamanders.

GOAT

Game: First Game
Other Media: The Rules of Combat Dome
Number witnessed: 1

Nibbles, the only Combat Dome character yet featured who could be easily described as ‘loveable’, is a goat. Oddly, one of the player-characters in this game was named Goat, although he does not appear to be one. He doesn't actually deny it though…

HORSE

Game: First Game; DD&D
Number witnessed: 3

Death (see below) is described as mounted on a horse in the First Game, and both Igor and Teatime ride horses in DD&D.

HUMAN

homo-sapiens.jpg

Game: First Game; FFVII Game; DD&D; SS&S
Other Media: It Runs in the Family; The Life of Joanna Hojo-Be-Damned Whatyoulike; Charge of the Phoenix; Phase Zero
Number witnessed so far: a lot (or 3, depending)

Humanity appears to be a terribly versatile race as it has become the apparent dominant species on the Game World, on Gaia and on the Disc, plus one of the dominant races on Diversity. Although if you are of the mindset that fictional characters do not count, then technically the Sourceworlder, Rowan and Craig (mentioned) are the only humans yet to feature.

IGOR

Game: DD&D
Number witnessed: 1

It’s not really known for sure whether Igors count as a seperate species or not, but the only one so far to feature refers to them as ‘we Igors’, so it could be inferred that he feels them to be so. An Igor resembles a malformed, stitched-together human.

J451

Game: FFVII Game
Other Media: For Want of a Nail. Maybe.
Number witnessed: 1

A genetic experiment of Hojo’s gone horribly wrong which Loki was forced to reduce to a puddle of slime.
See also: Monster

JOANNA’S SPECIES

Game: FFVII Game
Other Media: The Life of Joanna Hojo-Be-Damned Whatyoulike; It Runs in the Family; FWoaN (mentioned)
Number seen: 1

It is heavily implied that Joanna is a Cetra (Ancients) survivor. In FFVII Canon, Aerith was the last of these, but there was never actually any proof of that. It is entirely possible she had a distant cousin living in secret who no one knew about… If this is the case, she would seem to be a significantly more powerful one than Aerith, possibly due to Hojo's meddling, and it also raises the question of why Hojo didn't hand her over to Shin-Ra instead of trying to use Aerith. All this was due to be explained in TLoJH-B-DW but wasn't due to a sudden attack of laziness and forgetfulness….

LEOPARD

Game: First Game
Number witnessed: only mentioned

Springheel narrowly declines the opportunity to rape a leopard in the mountains.

MANXOME FOE

Game: SS&S
Number witnessed: over 5

Manxome foes are a race of monstrous creatures based on the poetry of Lewis Carroll, who are one of the dominant races on Diversity. They have multiple abilities based on defying the laws of probability, and are particularly vulnerable to nonsense weapons.

METAPHOR

Game: FFVII Game
Number witnessed: 1

A genetic experiment of Hojo’s with impressive magic powers but a low reilience to explosion of the head.
See also: Monster

MONSTER

Game: FFVII Game; mentioned in S&S
Other Media: For Want of a Nail
Number witnessed: 4 (5 if you count Roddy)

Hojo regularly makes monsters for little or no reason. An undescribed monster named Experiment J451 (see above) escapes and is killed by Loki, and another named Metaphor (see above) is pitted against Loki in virtual combat. When attacked by Cloud and friends, Hojo conjures up two monsters to fight alongside him. Note that the Manxome Foes (see above) are often referred to, derisively, as monsters.

MUTANT

Game: First Game; FFVII Game
Number witnessed so far: 3

An undescribed creature labelled ‘mutant’ is killed by Zion. In the FFVII Game, Hojo injects himself with Jenova Cells and subsequently mutates himself. One could also class Roddy the lab rat as a mutant, as he has been genetically altered to turn into a monster (see above) periodically.

NAC MAC FEEGLE

Game: DD&D
Number witnessed: unspecified

Nac Mac Feegle (AKA Pictsies or Wee Free Men) are tiny blue smurfesque Scottish stereotypes. A Pictsie clan is seen in DD&D.

NacMacFeeglesBanner.jpg

PENGUIN

Game: SS&S
Number Witnessed: 1

There is, for some reason, a penguin in the Multicultural Milly's refrigerated hold.

PETE'S SPECIES

Game: SS&S
Number Witnessed: 1

Pete is a staff member at the Neutral Territory tavern with a history with Talhoffer. We are not told what he is, but he is able to create unique fires by eating raw materials and vomiting, and he apparently has (or had) a tail.

RAT

Game: FFVII Game
Other Media: It Runs in the Family; Charge of the Phoenix
Number witnessed: 1

A lab rat named Roddy is Loki’s pet (although notably, only half his time is spent as a conventional rat – the other half he spends as a huge rat-monster).

Game: FFVII Game
Number witnessed: 1

Red XIII is a red-furred leopard-like (see above) creature who appears briefly in the FFVII Game.

SEA SERPENT

Game: SS&S
Number Witnessed: Over 4

Also sometimes called sea worms, these are large snake-like or worm-like undersea creatures. One, explicitly called a 'sea worm' was seen to be large enough to crush a ship.

SEA WORM
See SEA SERPENT above.

SPRINGHEEL JACK’S SPECIES

Game: First Game; alluded to in FFVII Game
Number witnessed: 1

Springheel Jack is an amoral caricature of a human with metal claws and an awesome high-jump record. He also exhibits some evidence of an involuntary ability to jump between dimensions.

STAR TURTLE

Game: DD&D
Number witnessed: 1

Great A’Tuin the Star Turtle carries the Discworld through space. Doesn’t appear to require air or sustenance to survive. Resembles a really big turtle. When the magic is sucked out of the universe, Great A'Tuin falls onto what appears to be a huge stack of Star Turtles… all the way down.

SUPERHUMAN

Game: FFVII Game
Other Media: The Life of Joanna Hojo-Be-Damned Whatyoulike; Charge of the Phoenix
Number witnessed: unclear

One of the consequences of Shin-Ra’s scientific meddling is the creation of superhuman beings such as Sephiroth and Genesis. Brall also turns himself in a clone of Genesis. At least some of the inhabitants of Deepground are superhuman. The only apparent defining feature of such superhumans is that they are adept at swordplay and most have at least one wing.

THREE-LEGGED ALIEN

Game: FFVII Game
Number witnessed: only mentioned

The Sourceworlder accidentally met some of these of his travels. They cannot feel pain and as such see no problem in crucifying him to show his importance.

TOAD

Game: DD&D
Number Witnessed: 1

The Feegles' (see above) defence lawyer is a toad.

TIME LORD

Game: DD&D; SS&S
Other Media: Phase Zero
Number Witnessed: 1… or 2… or 2.5

A race of time-travelling, two-hearted, near-immortal aliens from the Whoniverse. The Doctor is a Time Lord. Jenny is also a Time Lord… genetically at least. And River Song is not a Time Lord, but does have Time Lord DNA bonded to her own.

TROLL

Game: DD&D
Number witnessed: 6

Trolls are large creatures made from living rock. An enterprising troll named Chalky charges people to see the Auditor’s Portal, another troll is seen talking to Susan, and four more are seen going into the Pork Futures Warehouse to discuss misdeeds.

UNDEAD

Game: FFVII Game; DD&D; SS&S
Number Witnessed: over 7

The Undead are creatures that were once alive but were subsequently half-ressurected through magic. They appear in the form of ghosts (see above) in Shin-Ra Manor, and as zombies (see below) on the Disc. On Diveristy, the undead are one of the dominant races. Professor H Talhoffer is a new, undefined form of undead. They can curse people by biting them, and return to undeath after a while when killed. They are vulnerable to religion. Subspecies include Vampires (which survive by sucking blood), Lichs (which are immortal provided their soul remains sealed in a phylactery) and Ghouls (which are unintelligent and feed on dead flesh).

WEAPON

1st_Ever_FFVII_WEAPON_Sprites_by_MasterGallade.png

Game: FFVII Game
Number witnessed: 3

WEAPONs are huge monsters created by the planet itself to protect it from Sephiroth and his plans. All look completely different but are simply referred to as ‘WEAPON’, and at least two were killed, both incidently by the Sister Ray.

WORLD-BEARING ELEPHANT

Game: DD&D
Number witnessed: 4

Four huge elephants stand on the back of Great A’Tuin the Star Turtle (see above) and hold up the Disc. Don’t ask why.

ZOMBIE

Game: DD&D
Number Witnessed: only mentioned

A zombie is a type of animated corpse. Mr Slant, the lawyer whom the Feegles (see above) infiltrate the office of, is a zombie.

FLORA

LEVEL-UP DRUG

Game: First Game
Number witnessed: 1

Recovered from a mutant (see above) by Zion and smoked. Caused no apparent adverse effects, but did make him stronger in almost every way.

MARRAM GRASS

Game: FFVII Game
Number witnessed: unspecified

Grows in the desert where the climax takes place. Brall impales some people with it.

POTATO

Game: SS&S
Number witnessed: 1

GLaDOS the supercomputer (see below) is trapped in a potato at the time that she ended up in the SS&S universe.

TREE

Beech_Tree.jpg

Game: FFVII Game; SS&S
Number Witnessed: many

Loki walks through a jungle of them in Banora, and remarks that if Brall and he were to hide out there Hojo’s army would be plant food. Loki also extracts the DNA from a tree and injects it into the enemy during the climax. Fairyland contains many trees, some of which are magical, and Xylia lives in one. Lucinda de Millcara makes a tree grow by magic. Oddly, trees are not mentioned at any other time.

BIT OF BOTH

FLYING PUMPKIN

Game: FFVII Game
Number witnessed: unspecified

Attack Loki in Shin-Ra manor. He tries to shoot them but they breathe some sort of coordination-affecting drug on him.

LOCO WEED

Game: FFVII Game
Number witnessed: unspecified

Dried and shredded by Brall in order to make the Gift of the Goddess. Small green tufts with faces.

MARLBORO

Game: FFVII Game
Number witnessed: only mentioned

Misleadingly, Marlboro are not cigarettes but merely plant-creatures with apalling breath. Can be juiced, although no-one sems to be clear on why.

WACKY BACKY

Game: FFVII Game
Number witnessed: only mentioned.

Just to confuse people, wacky backy is not itself a smokable drug, but is a plant-creature whose corpses are used as drugs of some sort.

SUPERNATURAL CREATURES

ANGEL

Game: SS&S
Number Witnessed: 1

Angels are the messengers and agents of deities. The Damned - a rebellious, fallen angel of the Unspeakable Faith is encountered by Xylia and Talhoffer. It has the ability to invade and take over minds with a single touch, and can change the physical attributes of people under its control.

ANTHROPOMORPHIC PERSONIFICATION

Game: First Game; DD&D; SS&S
Number Witnessed: 4 seen, 2 mentioned

Humanoid representations of immaterial concepts. In addition to the various personifications of Death (see below), the SS&S universe has Life-in-Death, a personification of undeath and fates worse than death; and also mentions a personification of Fate.

AUDITOR

Game: DD&D
Number witnessed: unspecified

The Auditors of Reality are small semi-substantial cowls with the ability to alter the fabric of the universe and an intense dislike of disorder, life and truth

DEATH (PERSONIFICATION THEREOF)

1260572507_2492253bd3_o.jpg

Game: First Game; DD&D; SS&S
Number witnessed: 3 seen; 1 mentioned

A personification of Death is seen mourning his missed opportunity to kill Springheel. He is not described but is implied to take the classic ‘Grim Reaper’ appearance. The Death of Rats (who looks like the Grim Reaper rodentised – the Grim Squeaker if you will) speaks to Lu Tze at Susan’s request. Susan also mentions her Grandfather, who, we know from the books, is himself a personification of Death. The Death of the SS&S universe is seen several times, as people in that universe keep dying.

GAMEMASTER

Game: All
Number witnessed: 3

The Gamemaster is the supreme being of Combat Dome; an omniscient, omnipotent, omnipresent, sardonic and slightly annoying voice in the PCs’ heads.
While most of Combat Dome so far has been controlled by what is clearly the same Gamemaster, there is a second, weaker voice, dubbed the 'Jokester' which controls small parts of the Gamemaster's universes and communicates directly with the usual Gamemaster. When the Jokester finally gets his own universe to play with, the Gamemaster sends a third such creature - the 'Assistant', who is suspiciously similar to Clipper the Microsoft paperclip - to 'help'.

GHOST

Game: FFVII Game; SS&S
Number witnessed: 1

Loki sees an undescribed ghost in the manor. It growls at him and floats away when he tries to speak with it. Clyde, encountered by Talhoffer in the New Kingdom, is also a ghost.

GOD(DESS)

goddess3_2.jpg

Game: FFVII Game; DD&D; SS&S
Number witnessed: 3 explicitly named

The Goddess is a mysterious otherworldly being who turned up to help Loki’s army out on Gaia, and implies she used to be the same species as Joanna (see above). On the Disc, the Gods are rather less enigmatic and rather more irritating, created from the belief of their followers – Blind Io is the only one who actually does very much. A 'Goddess of order' was used as part of the Auditor's plan, in ways not entirely clear. Gods of thios kind are also mentioned to exist on Diversity, worshipped only by the humans - although Tamel does make a cryptic reference to 'dwarf gods'.

It would appear that, upon comparison, the Goddess (pictured) is not actually a God in the same sense as the Gods of the Disc. However, we at InfoDome take the view that if you can't be bothered to give your species a non-confusing name, that's your fault and not ours.

Jenova%20AC.jpg

JENOVA’S SPECIES

Game: FFVII Game
Number witnessed: only mentioned

What Jenova actully was is unclear, but she seemed to have had supernatural powers and her DNA was used to create Sephiroth.

J.W. BRAUN'S SPECIES

Game: SS&S
Number witnessed: unspecified

J.W. Braun is CEO of an ultradimensional company composed of beings powerful enough to construct their own universes, who are implied to only take humanoid forms when necessary.

SUMMON

Game: FFVII Game
Other Media: It Runs in the Family; For Want of a Nail
Number witnessed: 3

OTHER THINGS WHICH COULD BE CLASSED AS ALIVE1

CHEESE

Game: DD&D
Number witnessed: 1

One of the members of the Feegle (see above) clan is a cheese named Horace. Despite being technically inanimate, it can move and sort-of speak. There also may be such a cheese in our own fridge

PERSONALITY CORE

Game: SS&S
Number witnessed: 2

Two intelligent (well… sentient) personality cores float into the SS&S universe when it breaks.

SCHRODINGER'S CAT

Schrodingers-Cat-LOL.jpg

Game: FFVII Game; DD&D; SS&S
Number Witnessed: 2 witnessed (maybe), 1 mentioned

On our world, Schrodinger's cat is not an animal but a thought experiment. In Bugenhagen's? Who knows…?
Lu Tze also encounters what appears to be a Schrodinger's Cat in the DD&D universe, during a period in which everything was screwed up. In SS&S, a potato inhabited by GLaDOS (long story) transformed into a Schrodinger's Cat after managing to be simultaneously inside and outside of a box.

SUPERCOMPUTER

Game: FFVII Game; SS&S
Other Media: It Runs in the Family; For Want of a Nail
Number witnessed: 2

The kind-hearted, intelligent supercomputer named J.A.N.E works for Loki (technically, for a short while, he works for her) and has a human-enough personality that Loki gets genuinely attatched to her. The less kind-hearted, equally-intelligent supercomputer GLaDOS ends up in the SS&S universe when it breaks, albeit in the form of a potato (see above) battery.
