Charge of the Phoenix

Half a league half a league,
Half a league onward,
All in the valley of Death
Rode the brave Phoenix:
'Forward, Roddy!
Aim for the eyes!’ he said:
Into the valley of Death
Rode the brave Phoenix.

'Forward, Genesis!'
Was there a man dismay'd ?
Probably, the scientist knew.
Onwards, on Shiney:
His was not to make reply,
His was not to reason why,
His but to do, then die,
Into the valley of Death
Rode the brave Phoenix.

Deepground to right of him,
Deepground to left of him,
Deepground in front of him.
Hurled by Genesis;
Shot at with shot and spell,
Boldly he rode and well,
Into the jaws of Death,
Into the mouth of Hell
Rode the brave Phoenix.

Flash'd Hojo’s sabres bare,
Flash'd Mr Shiny in mid air
Over the gunners there,
Charging an army while
All the world wonder'd:
Plunged in the battery-smoke
Right thro' the line they broke;
Shelke and Nero
Fled from his sabre-stroke,
Til he was sunder'd.
Then he came back, and still
Rode the brave Phoenix.

Deepground to right of him,
Deepground to left of him,
Deepground behind him
Volley'd and thunder'd;
Storm'd at with shot and spell,
Once more the hero fell,
He that had fought so well
And then, from the jaws of Death,
Unleashed some magic Hell,
On all that was left of them,
That stood ‘gainst the Phoenix.
